Columbia Street Bike Lane: Open for Business
October 11, 2011
We took a ride down to DUMBO on Sunday via the Columbia Street Greenway and I was happy to see the new jersey-barrier-protected bike lane, now fully painted and available to use. I ride this route all the time, so seeing the finished product was a real-life manifestation of Jan Gehl’s famous quote: “It’s really wonderful to live in a city where every day when you wake up in the morning you realize that the city is a little bit better than yesterday.”
Here’s the view looking up Atlantic Avenue, around the bend to Columbia Street:

It is a huge improvement for sure… though Pier 6 still deserves a grander entrance to the park, like with a big fountain meeting place or something. The fact that truck traffic wasn’t diverted to a Congress Street entrance is a bit puzzling. Also… as nice as the path is… it must just be a baby step, because the jersey barrier separated green paint ends at Congress and then bikes/peds again have to mix dangerously since DOT has refused to put in a light or crosswalk at the intersection. Baby steps.
Agreed. But hopefully this small step will drive enough bike traffic that the need for further improvements will become impossible to ignore. If you build it, they will come, and you’ll need to build more.
