The Daily News

I have a piece on the Daily News Opinion page today about how the NYPD responds to crashes that injure and kill New Yorkers on bikes. Give it a read and let me know what you think.
Many thanks to opinion editor Josh Greenman for his editing skills and helpful suggestions.

Thank you for raising these important yet ignored issues in your excellent Daily News op-ed.
I agree that failure-to-yield stings would be a far more effective response to preventable traffic deaths than NYPD’s punitive ticketing of cyclists.
Far too many drivers seem to ignore or disregard the right of way of bicycles when making turns through bike lanes, while they won’t hesitate to brake for crossing pedestrians.
The recent case of Ms. Hurley at E.9th street you cited is a perfect example. I have been nearly hit at the exact same intersection by a turning driver who refused to look in his side mirror before proceeding forward. But it is such an extremely common occurrence-it seems I have to evade a car or truck turning into me through a bike lane nearly daily.
This is not a difficult problem to solve. We just need to incentivize drivers somehow to recognize that this dangerous indifference to the safety of the lives of people on bikes must stop.
